But what exactly is an exosome and what is so special about these alien looking things? The word “exosome” often gets loosely thrown around. The scientific definition comes from the Latin, “exo” meaning outside and “some” or “soma” meaning cellular. So literally it means anything that started in the cell and was released in a package to the environment outside that cell or put another way nanosized extracellular vesicles crucial to intercellular communication.
